Breast cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in the world today. In the United States alone, about one in eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in time in her life. In 2010 the Breast Cancer Organization reported that approximately 207,090 new cases of invasive types of breast cancer and 54,010 cases of non-invasive breast cancer were diagnosed. While most people diagnosed with breast cancer are women, almost 2000 cases of invasive breast cancer are reported in men each year.

Using a breast cancer model to discuss this very important disease with women and their families is a must in both oncology offices as well as those of family care practitioners. The use of a breast cancer model can help a patient in understanding what the physician is discussing at a time of high anxiety and stress. Research into patient response to diagnosis shows that the more options that the patient has to see, hear and remember what is said the more accurately he or she will retain the nformation. Simply hearing a diagnosis of breast cancer is stressful and extremely confusing. Allowing time between the diagnosis and discussing the treatment options is essential to minimize anxiety and allow the patient to clearly understand the options available.

A breast cancer model that is lifelike in appearance is very helpful.  Lifelike materials that mimic the skin and underlying tumors or masses are instrumental in working with patients in teaching correct self-examination practices. These models can also provide assistance in helping the patient understand the tissue changes that are occurring in the breast due to cancer or any type of fibrocystic mass. Cards that accompany the breast cancer model show the four different stages of breast cancer in diagram form for quick reference. In addition, a breast cancer model that allows the patient to understand the different types of tumors or growths in the breast can be extremely beneficial. By using this type of model the physician can explain the prevalence of the specific type of tumor as well as address the most commonly used treatment forms. With options to manipulate the breast cancer model and visually see the data as well as hear the information from the doctor, the patient is better informed.

From the typical breast cancer model that is meant to be very realistic in showing the exterior aspects of the cancerous breast a cross section models provides even more medical detail. This anatomy model, which is color coded and shows the internal structures and possible tumors in a breast, helps the patient to understand the medical issues of the disease. All features of the breast are displayed in the cross section including the suspensory ligaments, lymph nodes, ribs and muscles. This detail can be very helpful if surgical procedures are required to remove the tumor or the entire breast. With more information the patient is better informed and can more actively participate in treatment and recovery both in the short and long term.
